Change is hard, especially when it involves a move. Whether we’re changing apartments, moving cities, or moving offices, the whole process can feel foreign and tends to throw us for a loop.
Now, I’m told that there are people who like this kind of change - people who can’t stay in the same place for too long. This doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, mainly because I hate it, but I envy these movers for one simple reason: it’s almost* inevitable.
(*It is possible to make it through life without ever leaving the comfort of your immediate environment, but for the sake of this blog post, we’re going to treat moving as an inevitable part of life.)
Moving is a lot like the rising of the sun; it’s going to happen whether we want it to or not. It’s scary and stress-inducing but it can also be a beautiful opportunity to continue our evolution as people. And that’s what brings us here today: to learn how to make the most of the changes we make in life, both big and small.
NEW BEGINNINGS LEAD TO NEW EXPERIENCES
Very recently, Unroll.Me moved into a new office in the heart of Manhattan. It’s a big change from where we’d been because not only do we have to get used to working in a different office, but we have to find the best route to take to work, the best places to grab lunch, and the best ways to acclimate to the rhythm of a new part of town. It’s not an easy adjustment to make.
When we spend a prolonged period of time in one place, we learn the ins and outs of it and we become comfortable in it. But when we move somewhere new, we’re a fish out of water and that’s ok. It opens us up to meeting new people, seeing new places, and having new experiences. It’s tough to leave an area that we know so intimately, but in that difficulty lies one of the excitements of being in a new area: getting to know it, intimately. It’s a difficult process, but that’s what makes it fun: we have to work for it.
NEW BEGINNINGS LEAD TO MINDSET CHANGES
I know how difficult it is to make a big life change, but changes afford us the opportunity to start again. I don’t necessarily mean starting over and becoming a completely new person (which is totally acceptable), I mean starting over and changing our mindset or injecting new life into whatever it is we’re working on.
One of the biggest contributors to burnout is monotony. Everything looks the same, sounds the same, tastes the same, etc. But with a completely new environment, the same meetings we have every day and the same commute we make to work every day have a different flare to them. We see different buildings and different shops, we smell different (not always better) smells, and we experience the world around us differently. It’s like buying a new car. The “new car smell” will eventually fade away but it’s hard not to enjoy it while it’s there.
Regardless of how comfortable we are in a certain place or situation, a move—while not a necessity—or change of pace can really kick us into gear. No one wants to leave their friends, colleagues, acquaintances, or neighborhood behind but leaving give us the chance to meet new people and build new relationships. It allows us to take our best interests to heart and act towards them. It allows us to mature and become the people we need to be. If we find ourselves in a place that isn’t making us happy, or is draining us of who we want to be, staying is the worst thing we can do. We need to force ourselves out of our comfort zone, and sometimes that means we need to move on.
