How to Make the Most of Your Summer Fridays

It used to be thought that the more you work, the better. Now, however, it seems like people are wising up to the fact that working too much may not only be bad for your health, but it could also negatively affect the quality of your work, and maybe even your happiness.

Well, unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the conventional five-day work week is going anywhere any time soon, but that’s not the point. The point is, the allure of working less has gripped people for what I can only assume is forever, but to no avail. Alas, fear not weary workers, we have been blessed with the reemergence of the blessed “Summer Friday”.

For those of you not in the know, the Summer Friday is a truncated Friday where employees are allowed to leave the office early, enjoy the life-affirming warmth of the sun, and get a jump start on the weekend. It’s all the kids are talking about these days but how do you make the most of those precious hours of pre-weekend?

That’s what I’m here to help you with:

MAKE YOUR SUMMER FRIDAY A SUMMER FRI-YAY

The best thing about the summer Friday is that the glowing warmth of the sun kicks your internal clock into gear. Even if you just got through a particularly arduous work week, walking out into the sun will make you feel fresh and lively and like a million bucks. Take advantage of that.

I’ve said this literally a million times, but get out and tour your city. See how it lives during work hours. Experience the sights, the sounds, the smells (caution: they’re not all good).

Meet up with some friends, pick an area of town and experience it. There’s a lot to see, you just have to look for it.

Try the Food

We’re are going through a food renaissance now as cities not known for their cuisines are starting to surprise people. On your walk with your friends, you’re inevitably going to walk past some food establishments. Find one that catches your fancy and give it a whirl. Because of the time of day, I would recommend not picking a proper restaurant and sticking with portable foods that you can walk around with.

Grab a Drink

Nothing says “the weekend” like a good ol’ drink. Look for a place with outdoor seating and a decent drink menu (a great drink menu can make up for indoor seating), order up a round or two of your drink of choice and enjoy the infancy of your weekend.

If you’re feeling up to it, find a more adventurous bar and grab yourself something you’ve not tried before. Absinthe, anyone? Don’t knock it ‘til you try it.

Find an Elevated Spot

This is an absolute must. The only thing better than a rooftop is a rooftop at sunset. That’s a fact. After a couple hours of roaming around the city eating, drinking, and enjoying life, see if you can find yourself an elevated perch from which to watch the sun set. It’ll surprise you with its beauty and its tranquility. There’s really no better way to end a work week than with good food, good drinks, good company, and a sunset.

Summer, at least up North, is pretty short lived. Take advantage of it while you can. I know all too well how easy it is to leave the office and want to go straight to the couch. Don’t do this. You can go towards the couch, but hold off on grabbing a seat until after the sun goes away.

If you don’t get summer Fridays, if you stick around the office until six o’clock, worry not. There are plenty of hours of sunlight remaining. Take advantage of the daylight you have and revel in its majesty.

Until next time – let’s go exploring.
